Deep2 02hr C Oct06

From NYU CCPP Wiki

This is a page about the PRIMUS project.

The DEEP2 observations for October 2006 are meant to provide simultaneously a complement to the DEEP2 spectroscopy and simultaneously a good training set for SDSS photo-zs. In this case (C instead of B), we are targeting a region without much DEEP2 spectroscopy, so we are doing the full set (not the "complementary" set as in case B).

The October run has some slight changes to the May run.

  1. We've now included SKY slits, since we want them for testing sky subtraction
  2. The slits are 1.6 arcsec long
  3. We implement the new sparse sampling that allows noncolliding DEEP2_FAINT_ALL targets into priority 306 with 100% likelihood, but colliding ones with 30% likelihood.

We are using SDSS stars for the alignment. There are some significant residuals between the SDSS and DEEP2 here (at the 0.2 arcsec level) systematically depending mostly on RA and offset mostly in the DEC direction. Since these appear in comparison with multiple SDSS runs, we trust the SDSS better than DEEP2. We fit these out as best we can, and apply the corrections to all DEEP2 sources. These corrections are different (and we think better) than the May 2006 astrometry corrections.

The priorities are:

  1. SDSS_CALIB (106): SDSS F stars
  2. SDSS_AGN (206): Richards et al (2004) photometric QSOs with g < 21 (and i > 19) from their DR3 catalog)
  3. DEEP2_BRIGHT_ALL, DEEP2_FAINT_ALL (306): Sparse-sampled complementary DEEP2 galaxies (that is, z < 0.7). Bright set is R < 22.8, faint set is 100% of those with 22.8 < R < 23.3 which only collide with zero or one other objects (of this priority level), 30% of those that collide with more.
  4. DEEP2_BRIGHT_ALL_FILL, DEEP2_FAINT_ALL_FILL (406): Those that would have been in set 306 except that they were not selected in the density-dependent sparse sampling.
  5. DEEP2_BRIGHT (505): DEEP2 spectroscopic galaxies with R < 22.8
  6. DEEP2_FAINT (606): DEEP2 spectroscopic galaxies with R > 22.8
