Getting to and from La Serena, Chile (Magellan)

From NYU CCPP Wiki

  • Make sure you fill out the travel form!
-- Make sure your laptop is registered! - Gz323
  • Plane tickets cost anywhere from $1000 to $2000 to get to La Serena from New York City.
  • From La Serena you get picked up at the airport and driven up to the mountain, which is a 3ish hour drive more or less directly upwards.
  • Generally, say you are observing the night of the 11th, I plan on getting there on the 10th, which means leaving on the 9th. It is usually best to plan to arrive on the morning plane from Santiago to La Serena (11am arrival in LSC?), since that usually guarantees getting up the same night.
  • You can virtually always get back to La Serena for the 12:20pm flight to Santiago (assuming they are running it) the morning you finish observing. So if your only night of observing was the 11th, you could book a plane out at noon or later on the 12th. That would get you back to the US on the 13th. Yes, for one night of observing you are gone for at least 3 and 1/2 days!
  • Bring the phone number and address of El Pino (the Carnegie offices in La Serena) with you. That way if the Carnegie guy misses you at the airport you can contact them!
  • Making the transfer in Santiago is not completely obvious. You need to leave the international baggage claim, then ascend 3 floors (ignoring the taxi drivers), and check in again (usually) with Lan Chile, and go through security again into the domestic terminal. There are places to get coffee inside the domestic terminal.
  • Room-and-board must be paid for on the mountain in USD cash! The cost is around $35/day.
